Report into Building Society Sector’s Performance Relative to Banks Published

30 September 2015

BSA Paper

This September, City University London and the Building Societies Association (BSA) published a research paper examining the performance of UK building societies, relative to banks, over the last 15 years.

The research compares the mortgage rates and savings rates of banks and building societies, with the building society sector achieving favourable results.

Dr Barbara Casu, Reader in Banking and Director of the Centre for Banking Research, City University, London, commented: “Building societies have recovered well from the financial turmoil and they appear less risky than banks on a variety of measures. Their recent performance should put them in good stead to face the challenges driven by regulatory pressure and reform.”
