Financial Milestone Marked with Hospice Legacy

25 November 2014

Lasting Legacies Donation

This year, the Society passed a major financial milestone – one billion pounds in assets. To mark this momentous occasion, we will be giving back to the wider local community through some unique and exciting funding projects with a view to creating lasting legacies for the Society, its members and the communities in which it operates.

The Society has worked in close collaboration with a number of local and national bodies covering a wide spectrum of society including health, the environment, homelessness and the young in order to identify projects of great, lasting need. The recipient of the donation in the Health category has now been announced as St David’s Hospice Care who received a generous donation of £8,000.

St David’s Hospice Care, based in Malpas, Newport, aims to provide and continue to develop a free and comprehensive palliative care service of excellence throughout Caerphilly, Monmouthshire, Newport, Torfaen and within South and Mid Powys for people, their families and carers facing a progressive life-limiting illness which is no longer curable.

Through the lasting legacies element of the Society’s Billion Pounds Milestone Celebrations, the Society has funded a complete ward refurbishment at St Anne’s Hospice, a ten bed in-patient unit that provides care and support for adults who have a life-limiting illness. The refurbishments include bed linen, furnishings, curtains and entertainment which will help to improve the experience of the many patients who stay at St Anne's at a very sensitive stage of their lives.

Chief Executive, Andrew Lewis, commented: “The Society has experienced another exceptional year of growth, as customers continue to respond to our competitive mortgage and savings products. The achievement of a billion pounds of assets is as a result of the support of the communities in which we operate, and we’ve set ourselves the task of giving back widely to create lasting legacies to mark this momentous occasion. We’re thrilled to be able to support St David’s, and hope the ward refurbishments play even a small part in helping those suffering from a terminal illness.”

Kris Broome, of St David’s Hospice Care, said: “We are delighted to be named as recipients of such a generous donation from Monmouthshire Building Society as part of their Billion Pounds Asset Celebrations. Without help from individuals and businesses in the local area, St David’s wouldn’t be able to carry out its vital, life-changing work, and the ward refurbishment will go a long way towards providing the best treatment and experience possible for our patients.”
