Pride of Gwent

Shauna Cook, who works in the Society’s Credit Control department, has been nominated for a prestigious Pride of Gwent Award because of the amount of her free time which has been used to help others.

Shauna was nominated by her mum, Suzanne Cook, who described Shauna as “amazing”.

“She has a heart of gold and I’m extremely proud of her,” she added. “One of my proudest moments was when she did a sky dive to raise money for Wales Air Ambulance. All the family are really proud of her.”

Commenting on her nomination, Shauna said: “In 2015, friends at the Society asked if anyone wanted to take part in a charity sky dive in Swansea and I put my name forward. I had heard a lot about Wales Air Ambulance and became interested in what they do, so I decided to raise money for them. Two of my friends also did it with me and we raised £1,000.”

Last year, she became involved with fundraising for LATCH, the Welsh children’s cancer charity, before deciding to help out the Salvation Army in a personal capacity.

“I really wanted to help the homeless and vulnerable in Newport, and wanted to create shoeboxes of essentials,” she said. “But then I got enough together to fill big boxes with clothes, toys, books and toiletries.”

This year, Shauna plans to volunteer further, possibly with animal groups. “I’m known as the cat lady because I help a few stray cats in my area,” she said. “I am an animal lover and I just want to make a difference and take great care of them.”

Shauna will find out if she’s won in her category during a ceremony to be held in March at the Coldra Court Hotel by Celtic Manor. Good luck from everyone at the Society!
