Age Connects Torfaen was recently awarded £500 funding by Monmouthshire Building Society Charitable Foundation to purchase radio equipment for a radio show run by and for older people.

The project, which works in partnership with Able Radio, aims to reduce social isolation amongst older people, whilst also helping to bring the local community together.

The £500 donation has gone directly towards a laptop, mixer, microphone and other recording equipment, and allows the volunteers to gain training to independently run their own weekly radio show, sharing information about local events and history as well as healthcare advice and information with the wider community.

Emma Wootten, Age Connects Torfaen Development Co-ordinator, commented: “Our volunteers are able to give first-hand knowledge of the local area, giving a friendly, personal touch for members of the community who may not otherwise have any contact with their cherished communities. We’re extremely grateful to the Foundation for the funding, and I have no doubt that the radio show will also help to improve the physical and mental health of our many volunteers and listeners.”

Since its launch in 2000, Monmouthshire Building Society Charitable Foundation has contributed over £170,000 to 287 organisations and charities. In the last financial year alone, the Foundation provided support to 21 local organisations, representing a significant contribution to communities across South Wales.

Michael Lane, Chairman of Monmouthshire Building Society Charitable Foundation, said: “The Foundation is delighted to be able to provide financial support to such a worthwhile organisation that does so much to tackle isolation in our local communities. The possibilities for features are endless, and it will also provide a unique opportunity for community members to come together to help and support each other and spread a little joy across the radio waves!”

The Foundation is happy to receive applications from all walks of life, such as sports groups, the environment, education and the arts. The Foundation also welcomes any donations or bequests from individuals.

Full information and guidance on how to apply can be found in the Foundation’s application form. Copies are available from any Monmouthshire Building Society branch or agency office, and can also be printed off from the ‘Community’ section of the Society’s website.
