Charitable Foundation Supports Clydach Heritage Centre

Dram Foundation Donation

Clydach Heritage Centre was recently awarded £475 funding by Monmouthshire Building Society Charitable Foundation to restore a dram from the 1800s.

The Centre opened in October 2011 and has attracted over 7,000 visitors since then, providing a wealth of historical and cultural information about the area’s past and present.

The £475 donation has been put to use by restoring the dram’s missing wheels, transforming it into a complete example of those used in the local area to bring coal and stones down the Swansea Canal to industries in Morriston and Swansea docks.

Gwyn Evans, the Centre’s Secretary, commented: “With visitor numbers increasing year on year, we’re thrilled to have received funding to restore such an important attraction at the Heritage Centre. The dram illustrates perfectly the need to promote and preserve our unique industrial heritage, and visitors will no doubt be impressed to see first-hand something that would have been commonplace in this once-bustling centre of the industrial revolution.”

Since its launch in 2000, Monmouthshire Building Society Charitable Foundation has contributed over £170,000 to 287 organisations and charities. In the last financial year alone, the Foundation provided support to 21 local organisations, representing a significant contribution to communities across South Wales.

Michael Lane, Chairman of Monmouthshire Building Society Charitable Foundation, said: “The Foundation is delighted to be able to provide financial support to such a worthwhile organisation that does so much to promote the important heritage of this very special part of Wales. I hope that the funding will help them to continue to build upon their very successful work so far, and it’s great to see the dram looking just as it would have two centuries ago.”

The Foundation is happy to receive applications from all walks of life, such as sports groups, the environment, education and the arts. The Foundation also welcomes any donations or bequests from individuals. The more funding received, the more local organisations and charities will benefit.

Full information and guidance on how to apply can be found in the Foundation’s application form. Copies are available from any Monmouthshire Building Society branch or agency office, and can also be printed off from the ‘Community’ section of the Society’s website.
