Community Urban Sports Project (CUSP), a skateboard, BMX and scooter activity group based at Exist Skatepark, Swansea, was recently awarded £3,000 by Monmouthshire Building Society Charitable Foundation to purchase scooters, skateboards and safety equipment.

CUSP is a grassroots program which aims to improve the level of extreme sport talent in South Wales whilst also promoting an active and healthy lifestyle. They provide a safe, supervised environment for young people from all walks of life to socialise and increase their fitness levels whilst also preparing some for competitions which take place throughout the year.

With over 1,000 members, resources are stretched to their limit, but they are determined to encourage more young people to take part, especially females and those from minority backgrounds, to highlight the benefits of sports which are otherwise ignored by mainstream media.

Anna Redfern, Fundraiser CUSP Swansea, commented: “We’ve spent a long time trying to engage various hard to reach groups in the sport, and it became apparent that an outreach element was needed in order to make the project accessible to those who need it the most. Disadvantaged young people are often unable to participate due to the costs involved or a lack of confidence, and this donation will be used to encourage more and more young people to get involved with an exciting project which could have long-lasting positive effects on their lives”.

Since its launch in 2000, Monmouthshire Building Society Charitable Foundation has contributed over £200,000 to more than 300 organisations and charities. In the last financial year alone, the Foundation provided support to 21 local organisations, representing a significant contribution to communities across South Wales.

The Foundation is happy to receive applications from all walks of life, such as sports groups, the environment, education and the arts. Full information and guidance on how to apply can be found in the Foundation’s application form. Copies are available from any Monmouthshire Building Society branch or agency office, and can also be printed off from the ‘Community’ section of the Society’s website at www.monbs.com/mbscf.
