With Autumn in full swing, nights are getting darker earlier and our homes are much more vulnerable to burglars who use the cover of darkness to go undetected.

According to figures from UKCrimeStats published in July 2016, there were 37,985 burglaries recorded nationwide in November 2015, compared to 32,319 in June the same year, highlighting the marked increase in thefts from homes in the darker months.

Besides damage to your property and a loss of valuables, the emotional distress can also be hard to deal with, often with long-lasting results. Unfortunately, even the most secure homes are targets for theft, but there are steps you can take to deter burglars which are relatively easy to carry out:

  • Set light timers: Plugging timers onto your lamps so that they go off and on intermittently when you aren’t at home will make it look like the house isn’t empty.
  • Hide valuables: Make sure your valuables, especially keys, aren’t on display so that they’re not visible from outside. This is especially important in the run up to Christmas.
  • Lock up: Always lock windows and doors, even when you’re in the house.
  • Use a good safe: Invest in a safe for valuables and sentimental items and securely fix it to a solid surface.
  • Join your local Neighbourhood Watch: Displaying a sticker in your window will let a burglar know that they are being watched by others in the community.
  • Check fences and lock side gates: If your home is surrounded by a fence, repair weak areas that might provide hidden access to a burglar.
  • Improve outdoor lighting: Install security lighting that activates with a sensor outside your property.
  • Lock garden equipment away: Secure garages and sheds so garden tools and ladders can’t be used to break into your home.
  • Register your belongings: Photograph and mark valuables and sentimental items with your postcode and house number/name. You can register items with serial numbers at www.immobilise.com.
  • Install an alarm: Alarms act as major deterrents to burglars. The initial outlay might be expensive, but this has to be weighed up against the value of your treasured contents.
