Society Staff Member Takes on Cardiff Half Marathon

Marathon Mikey

A dedicated member of the Society’s Marketing team will be taking part in the Cardiff Half Marathon this October.

Mike Yearsley, the Society’s Graphic Designer, is a running novice, and this is his first attempt at a half marathon. Mike began training a matter of months ago, and is running on behalf of Velindre Cancer Care in support of a friend and ex-colleague from the Society who is currently receiving treatment at the specialist cancer centre based in Cardiff.

Cardiff Half Marathon is one of Wales’ greatest sporting events, combining mass participation athletics and record-breaking fundraising in one race. The 13.1 mile route takes runners past the capital’s most iconic landmarks with beautiful scenery and historic buildings, and the predominately flat and fast course is ideal for both beginners and elites.

Mike said: “I’m thrilled to be taking on the challenge of a half marathon, especially since I hadn’t even considered running, let alone running competitively, just a few months ago. I’m honoured to be able to raise funds for Velindre, and I have witnessed first-hand the essential, life-saving work they carry out day in day out.”

He continued: “Velindre Cancer Centre provides specialist cancer services to over 1.5 million people in South Wales and beyond and they are one of the largest cancer centres in the UK. Each year over 5,000 new referrals and around 50,000 new outpatient appointments are seen, and I’m grateful for the generous donations I’ve received so far which will go direct to those in need.”
