On Friday 24th October, the Society-sponsored kicking competition which takes place during half-time at every Newport Gwent Dragons home game looked decidedly different with a number of well-known faces taking part.

Instead of participants being pulled from the Crowd, Pudsey Bear, Children in Need’s mascot, joined Rodney the Dragon and a whole host of other brightly coloured mascots from local charities and businesses for a kicking competition to remember.

The Society’s prize money, which is shared between winners and participants, was split two ways – between Children in Need and For Luca, a Newport-based charity which aims to provide prosthetic legs for a Newport-based child, Luca, who contracted Meningococcal Septicaemia in January 2012, changing his life forever.

The Society is a long-term supporter of Children in Need, and this is only the first stage in a few weeks of participation which will see branches and agencies fundraise for the inspiring charity which aims to change the lives of disabled children and young people across the UK.

Chief Executive, Andrew Lewis, commented: “The kicking competition helps to bring an element of fun audience engagement to the usual proceedings and this event was certainly one to remember. The Society is keen to support local charities such as For Luca, and it seemed a perfect choice to compliment the much-needed work of Children in Need.”

Mike Sage, Dragons Community Manager, added: “We were honoured to be able to support two fantastic charities through the Society’s half-time kicking competition, and the crowd certainly enjoyed the spectacle of the mascots giving their all on the day.”

If you’d like to take part in the Society’s Half-Time Kick-Off Competition, simply get in touch with Mike Sage, Janice Chappell or Phil James at the Newport Gwent Dragons community department, or pick up a flyer in the club shop for more details.

For anyone interested in donating to Children in Need, you can do so at any of the Society’s branches and agencies (up until the televised event on 14th November) where you’ll find a wide range of fundraising activities taking place.
