The impact of the pandemic in Wales, and across the wider UK, has increased the number of people living in or facing housing crises. Shelter Cymru have seen demand for their services rise as more people are turning to the charity for advice and support. In 2021 the charity supported 10,226 households, that’s the equivalent of 1 in every 185 people in Wales, as well as recording 422,245 unique visits to their advice line service.
Dafydd Davies, Health and Safety Manager at Peter’s Pies said, “We were delighted to help the Society raise funds for Shelter Cymru. Staff are always keen to support charity where they can and, having quite a few rugby fans at our Caerphilly site, a signed Dragons jersey was a big deal. The business agreed to match fund any money raised and Paul Hartshorn form Weston Security also donated a generous amount to the kitty helping us get to the £500 mark.”
The signed jersey had been donated to Swansea Branch Manager Jacky Grenfell by Dragons' players a couple of years ago and, living in an Ospreys and Scarlets area, Jacky was unsure as to how she could use the shirt in her branch. However, Customer Associate at the branch Jacob John got in touch with the Welsh food manufacturer to see if they could help.
Jacob said, "I was chuffed when Peter's Pies agreed to take on the challenge of raffling the shirt. We were gob smacked when they came back and told us they had raised £500! We thought we'd get about £200. This gave us real boost in branch, and I know it will make other colleagues smile as it's a good contribution towards our goal of raising £10,000 for Shelter Cymru over this financial year."
When the Society updated Shelter Cymru's Head of Fundraising Kerys Sheppard she was delighted with the news. Kerys said, "I am always humbled by the generosity of others and the effort they put into fundraising full stop. Shelter Cymru is one of many charities facing challenging times with resource stretch across funding, service provision and donations. As always, the Society continues to work with us and others to raise much needed funds that will help those facing housing crisis across Wales. Thank you to everyone involved and to staff at Peter's Pies for their continued support."
The lucky winner of the jersey was Denise Baker who has been a member of the Peter’s Pies team since 2005. Denise was more than happy to support Shelter Cymru saying, “I never win anything and I’m thrilled to bits to have this, I plan to get it framed and hang it on the wall of my new home.”
Thanks to support from colleagues, members and local businesses like Peter’s Pies, the Society has raised almost £9,000 since 1st May 2021.
