The Society, who regularly contribute to local communities and charitable initiatives through their award-winning Branching into Communities programme, has organised two book collections to contribute to local and national causes.
Colleagues at the Society have donated a collection of brand new children’s books to Read for Good, an organisation which encourages children to love reading. Read for Good work in schools and hospitals across the UK to make reading accessible and fun.
Read for Good’s Chief Executive Officer, Justine Daniels, said: “A love of reading can change a child’s life. At Read for Good we inspire, motivate and support children across the UK to enjoy reading, but we know many are struggling to access the brilliant books that could hook them into this life-long love.
“For children in hospital, books can be a powerful distraction and comfort – and a reminder of worlds outside of wards and waiting rooms. The support from Monmouthshire Building Society in bringing the power of stories to children who need them the most in schools and hospitals is absolutely wonderful.”
The Society also encouraged colleagues to bring in pre-loved books to donate locally to the second hand bookshop at Tredegar House in Newport. The bookshop serves the local Newport community as well as other visitors to the National Trust site.
Rosie Toy, Marketing and Communications Officer at Tredegar House said: “The second-hand bookshop is one of the cosiest corners of Tredegar House and is much-loved by the local community. Since it opened five years ago, it has been predominantly run by a small team of dedicated National Trust volunteers, who serve customers, organise donations and stock shelves. The bookshop has continued to expand since it first opened and, thanks to the support of generous people, it raises thousands of pounds each year. These donations go directly to the care of Tredegar House, helping to fund our conservation work, whether it’s in the house, gardens or parkland.
“As a charity, we rely on donations and memberships to support our work, so funds raised by the bookshop are incredibly valuable as they will help us look after Tredegar House for generations to come.”
The Society recently won a top national award for Community Services at the Mortgage Finance Gazette Awards. The award recognised the support the Society has given to its members, colleagues and communities over the past year through their range of community initiatives, which in addition to the Charitable Foundation includes sponsorship for local grassroots organisations and a colleague volunteering scheme.

Dawn Gunter, Chief Operating Officer at the Society said:
“It’s very important for Monmouthshire Building Society to be able to support our communities. The Society’s own values are about helping our colleagues, our members and our communities to thrive today and into the future, so initiatives like this one link incredibly well with our purpose.”
