The Welsh charity have just launched a new campaign highlighting that more than 1,500 children in Wales will be without a home this Christmas.
Mortgage Advisor April Glue said, “A few of us in the Society really wanted to do something to support Shelter Cymru and their campaign. We were shocked to hear that so many children are living in temporary accommodation that is unsuitable for their needs and wellbeing. A virtual bike ride meant we could come together as a team to fundraise and share the crux of the campaign message with our members and other colleagues.”
The ride is expected to last all week with colleagues taking it in turn to mask up, get in the saddle and cover the miles needed to virtually visit every branch and agency in the Society’s network.
CEO Will Carroll put in his share of miles on day one, helping the team cover over 63 miles along with Head of Distribution Eve Wilkins. The challenge is also being supported by colleagues from their homes, with Business Development Manager Greg Harry contributing 6.6 miles from Swansea.
Newport Branch Manager Tom Ireland reached out to his contacts to secure a static bike from Simply Gym in Cwmbran to ensure the ride could go ahead. Tom said, “I had to support this challenge! The team were so enthusiastic and determined to make a difference to Shelter. We’ve been delighted with the support that we’ve had so far from our Members and Colleagues. The team of riders have had some great fun - even with their sore bums! That said, the real success of this is down to Billy Lynch, one of our Customer Associates in the Newport branch, and April Glue.”
Billy said, “Cycling the whole of the branch and agency network isn’t an easy task, but we’re doing it to support and help make housing better for everyone in Wales. This really inspires me and keeps me going.”
