World Homeless Day 2021

‘You don’t have to be living on the street to be homeless. You may be sleeping on a friend’s sofa, staying in a hostel, or living in overcrowded or unsuitable accommodation.’ Shelter Cymru

This Sunday is World Homeless Day, an annual event that raises awareness of homelessness in our local communities through volunteering, education and encouraging donations to the organisations that support people on the verge of, or living with, homelessness.

World Homeless Day first started on 10th October 2010 (10.10.10) and is observed on every continent except Antarctica!

The Society will be supporting this annual event by fundraising on behalf of our strategic charity partner Shelter Cymru both in branch and at our head office.

Members and colleagues across the Society will be encouraged to donate to Shelter Cymru through our branch and head office bucket collections or digitally via our Just Giving page.

By donating the cost of a posh coffee and pastry, around £5.00, you can help support the work of Shelter Cymru in Wales. However, any donation is welcome no matter how big or small.

Shelter Cymru support around 18,000 people a year and offer free, confidential, and independent advice. They also act to constructively challenge on behalf of people to ensure they are properly assisted and, to improve practice and learning.

You could help someone like 24-year-old Owain, who found himself homeless during the pandemic, as a result of his mental health deteriorating whilst in university during lockdown.

Owain ended up living with a friend’s parents, sleeping on their sofa in a less than ideal situation. He’s now being helped by Shelter Cymru.
