Bee Friendly Monmouthshire was recently awarded £375 funding by Monmouthshire Building Society Charitable Foundation to purchase lollipop signs to promote their work on local habitats and help to raise further funding.

The recently formed group aim to create a bee friendly county, providing habitats to maintain and increase healthy populations of bees and other pollinating insects.

Bee Friendly Monmouthshire work with the Welsh Government, councils, land owners, businesses, schools, communities and individuals, aiming to raise public awareness of the importance of pollinating insects and the need for their protection.

Morris Jones, Bee Friendly Monmouthshire’s Finance Adviser, commented: “With bee numbers at a crisis point, I’m heartened to see so much support throughout Monmouthshire, not only for us to encourage bee and other pollinators to thrive, but also to reappraise the wealth of native flowers we so often neglect. Having the funding from the Foundation means that we can better publicise our work across the county, and hopefully gain more sustainable funding throughout the coming years.”

Since its launch in 2000, Monmouthshire Building Society Charitable Foundation has contributed over £170,000 to 287 organisations and charities. In the last financial year alone, the Foundation provided support to 21 local organisations, representing a significant contribution to communities across South Wales.

Michael Lane, Chairman of Monmouthshire Building Society Charitable Foundation, said: “The Foundation is delighted to be able to provide financial support to such a worthwhile organisation that works within local communities to improve and enhance the natural environment for people and wildlife alike. I hope that our funding will help them to continue to build upon their very successful work so far.”

The Foundation is happy to receive applications from all walks of life, such as sports groups, the environment, education and the arts. The Foundation also welcomes any donations or bequests from individuals. The more funding received, the more local organisations and charities will benefit.

Full information and guidance on how to apply can be found in the Foundation’s application form. Copies are available from any Monmouthshire Building Society branch or agency office, and can also be printed off from the ‘Community’ section of the Society’s website here.
