Kestrel Gymnastics Club, based in Chepstow, was recently awarded £500 funding by Monmouthshire Building Society Charitable Foundation to purchase essential safety landing mats and foam blocks.

The Gymnastics Club was founded in 1997 and offers a positive environment for local young people with classes for all levels of expertise, from beginners to existing gymnasts.

The vibrant and successful club is a not-for-profit organisation run largely by volunteers, offering recreational gymnastics sessions and training to a competitive level in tumbling and artistic gymnastics. Fully qualified coaches also offer a number of classes that develop children towards British Gymnastic Awards.

Shirley Lazere-Bennett, Head Coach of Kestrel Gymnastics Club, commented on the award: “With over 160 members at the moment it’s extremely important that health and safety requirements are maintained. Having the correct mats and foam blocks is vital for the training of all gymnasts and we were in desperate need prior to the donation so we’re extremely grateful for the helping hand.”

Since 2000, Monmouthshire Building Society Charitable Foundation has contributed over £160,000 to 262 local organisations and charities. In the last financial year alone, the Foundation has provided support to 33 local organisations. This represents a significant contribution to local communities across South Wales by a local organisation.

Penny Reeves, Chairman of Monmouthshire Building Society Charitable Foundation, said: “We are extremely pleased to have provided funding for essential safety equipment, and we look forward to watching many of the young gymnastics develop their skills and hopefully even go on to represent the UK at national and international events.”

The Foundation is happy to receive applications from all walks of life, such as the arts, education, youth groups, the elderly, the hospice movement, the environment, support groups and sports and fitness groups. The Foundation also welcomes any donations or bequests from individuals. The more funding received, the more local organisations and charities will benefit.
