Three Society staff members will be taking part in the Cardiff 10K this September in aid of LATCH, the Welsh children’s cancer charity.

Laura Harvey, Megan Johnson and Lucy Burgess, who work at the Society’s Newport Head Office, are running novices and this will be the first time they have taken part in an organised running event.

LATCH supports children and their families who are being treated by the Oncology Unit at the Children’s Hospital of Wales, whose catchment area stretches from Chepstow in the south to Aberwystwyth in the north. Around 70 new cancer and leukaemia cases are diagnosed every year, and their wide ranging support include on-site family accommodation, a social work service, family respite, financial and emotional support and much more.

The Cardiff 10K has become an iconic event here in Wales, with participants of all levels of running expertise, providing an opportunity for runners to fundraise for a chosen charity if they wish. The course is one of fastest and flattest 10k courses in the UK and has seen many world records broken and personal bests shattered.

Megan, one of the Society staff members taking part, said: “This is the first time I’ve taken part in a running event so I’m trying to get as much practice in before the day as possible. I’ve been determined to improve my fitness levels this year, and signing up was the boost I needed, plus there’s the added incentive of helping to raise money for such a worthwhile charity that does so much for children and families during an extremely sensitive time in their lives.”
