The Society is proud to have been shortlisted in the ‘Wales and West Utilities Building Stronger Communities Award’ category of the 2015 Wales Responsible Business Awards. Winners will be announced at a prestigious ceremony on Thursday 25th June at Cardiff City Stadium hosted by BBC Wales presenter, Lucy Owen.

As a shortlisted company, the Society has demonstrated significant achievements in helping to address the social, economic and environmental challenges we face as a nation through its Billion Pound Asset Legacy Programme.

The Programme launched in September 2014, just as the Society hit a major financial milestone – £1 billion in assets. To celebrate this landmark achievement, the Society decided to give back to the wider local community through some unique and exciting funding projects.

Lasting Legacies

A £75,000 funding pool was allocated to facilitate a series of large-scale donations, decided upon collaboratively with charities including St David’s Hospice Care, the Woodland Trust, Wales Air Ambulance, the Wallich and Noah's Ark Appeal to address need in the fields of the environment, health and the young.

Community Acorn Fund

A grassroots £25,000 fund was launched across our branch and agency network aimed at smaller community projects which saw 44 local groups, from Portishead to Swansea, Cardiff to Brecon, receive funding.

Commenting on the nomination, Andrew Lewis, Chief Executive, said: “I’m delighted that the Society has been recognised for its outstanding contribution to the local communties in which we operate. The response to the Acorn Fund was incredible, and I was particularly encouraged by the active support offered by each of our staff members who helped to promote and facilitate the Acorn Fund at a grassroots level.”

He added: “As a mutual organisation, owned by our members, we aim to offer something different to other financial institutions, and the Billion Pound Legacy Programme is proof that we are committed to providing ongoing support to a wide range of local, worthwhile causes.”
