Winter weather can take a heavy toll on your home, and the effect can be costly to both your health and your pocket. Prevention is the key when it comes to tackling the harshest of weather conditions, and taking simple steps now can help to minimise the risk of problems occurring if wintry conditions worsen.

We’ve put together some simple checks to carry out around the home that will help keep you safe, warm and dry whatever the weather:

  • Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarms – Regular checks not only provide peace of mind but could potentially save lives
  • Windows & Doors – Prevent warm air escaping and cold air entering by repairing faulty seals and using draught excluders
  • Pipes – Check their integrity on a regular basis to prevent freezing
  • Central Heating – Ensure your boiler is regularly serviced. Bleeding your radiators will also improve efficiency
  • Stock Up – Keeping items such as a torch, candles and matches in your home will make an emergency much easier to deal with
  • Insulation – As well as checking the adequacy of roof and cavity wall insulation, your water pipes and water tank should be properly insulated
  • Gutters & Drains – Regularly check for any blockages such as fallen leaves
  • Roof & Exterior – Check your roof for missing tiles, and your exterior walls for cracks, loose render or missing pointing
  • Recovery Plan – Keep a list of tradesmen and useful phone numbers to hand

It’s also vitally important that you ensure you have adequate insurance cover in place to protect your home and its contents. The Society has teamed up with RSA, one of the UK’s leading insurers, to offer our customers competitive and flexible home insurance that can be tailored to meet individual needs.
